Blackjack Agapanthus

These agapanthus grow proudly in my own garden, and they are some of my favourite flowers to have around. The variety is called Blackjack, and it lives up to the name, with a deep purple that moves almost into black in the shadows, set against bright yellow stamens that catch the eye immediately.

I fell in love with that contrast long before I decided to paint it. The richness of the purple against the warmth of the yellow felt like something worth spending real time on, capturing the full cluster of blooms at different stages, from tight unopened buds through to flowers fully open and trailing downward.

This is a flower I keep coming back to, and I have plenty of other reference photos from the garden that I would love to work from in the future. It would not surprise me if Blackjack Agapanthus becomes the start of its own small series.
