African Daisy

This painting carries a very particular memory. It was painted in 2020, during one of the strictest periods of South Africa’s lockdown, when we were only permitted outside for exercise between six and nine in the morning. The reference photo was taken on one of those walks, on a cold, misty morning, and this daisy, still covered in dew, caught my eye immediately.

I later used this same photograph and painting as a demonstration piece for an online workshop I taught during lockdown, walking students through my process for painting flowers, and in particular, how to paint convincing raindrops to bring a piece like this to life. Capturing the way each droplet catches the light, distorts the petal beneath it, and casts its own small shadow is a technique I enjoy teaching as much as painting.

Looking back at this piece now, it holds both a personal memory of a strange, uncertain time, and a small piece of teaching history from those months.
