Orange Gazania

This painting started in my own garden.

Gazanias grow easily and generously here in the Cape Winelands, and every season I find myself drawn back to them. Their colour seems to glow without any effort at all. This particular bloom, with its deep amber to gold petals and that rich, almost black centre, was simply too striking to pass by.

I originally set out to paint a series of five Gazanias, each one capturing a different colour from the garden. In the end, this and its companion, Yellow Gazania, were the two that felt complete on their own. Sometimes a painting tells you when it’s finished, even if the original plan was bigger.

What I love most about painting Gazanias is the contrast they offer. The dark, velvety centre against petals that seem lit from within. It’s a small, ordinary flower that becomes extraordinary the closer you look.
