Agapanthus

This painting began with a photograph taken at Lourensford Wine Estate in 2019. I try to bring my camera along whenever I suspect I might come across something beautiful, and this cluster of agapanthus was exactly that. It took until 2020 for me to finally sit down and paint it.

I set myself a particular challenge with this piece, to capture the full life cycle of the bloom within a single composition, from tight unopened buds through to flowers fully open and trailing outward. I also wanted to experiment with cropping the composition, choosing to paint only part of the flower cluster rather than the whole plant, which felt like a small but meaningful departure for me at the time.

Agapanthus remains one of my favourite flowers to paint, and this is very likely not the last one I will do. I am already on the lookout for different varieties to add to my own garden, with an eye on painting them again in the future.
