Frequently Asked questions
Artwork and Style
What style of art do you create? My painting style is contemporary realism with a romantic, botanical focus, capturing natural beauty through detailed, emotionally evocative oil paintings.
Do you paint from life or photos? I prefer working from photos. It allows me to study the detail closely and take my time building up each layer.
Can I request a painting in a different size or colour palette? Yes, I create custom artwork regularly, my canvas is handcrafted and can be made in any size that suits your room. I am also happy to work with you to find the perfect colour palette that will compliment your room.
Do you only paint florals, or do you offer other subjects like landscapes, portraits, or pets? Even though painting flowers will always be my main focus and love, I have also been inspired by wildlife for my originals recently. As far as commissioned work goes, I have recently painted pet portraits, child portraits, landscapes and architecture.
Purchasing Original Art
- How do I purchase one of your available paintings? You can purchase directly through my online shop using Payfast, which accepts debit and credit cards and works for both South African and international buyers. If you’d prefer not to pay online, you’re more than welcome to email me at info@melissaeybersart.com or fill out my contact form, and I’ll guide you through the process personally.
- Do you offer gift vouchers? Yes, I offer beautifully designed digital gift vouchers, perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, or weddings.
- Can I see the artwork in person before buying? If you’re based near Somerset West, I’m happy to arrange a viewing by appointment. Otherwise, I offer detailed photos and video previews to help you get a good sense of the work.
- How do I know the painting will suit my space? You’re welcome to send me a photo of your space, and I’ll digitally mock up the painting in your room to help you visualize it. I also provide accurate measurements and color descriptions.
- Will the colours look exactly like they do on screen?
I do my best to photograph and edit every painting as accurately as possible, but screens vary, so colours can shift slightly from one device to another. If you’d like to see additional photos in different lighting before deciding, just ask and I’ll happily send them through.
- Do you offer a discount if I buy more than one painting?
Yes, I’m happy to offer a discount when paintings are purchased together, particularly for companion pieces like the two Gazanias or the round rose paintings. Reach out and I will give you a fair price for the pair.
- How do you price your paintings?
My prices reflect the size of the canvas, the complexity of the piece, and the time invested in each layer of detail. Larger, more intricate paintings naturally take longer to complete, and the price reflects that. If you’re ever curious about the story or process behind a specific piece, I’m always happy to share more.
- Do you offer prints or only original pieces? At this time, I mostly offer original oil paintings. However, limited edition prints may be made available for select works. Please reach out if you’re interested.
Commissioning Custom Work
- How does the commission process work?
Start by sending me a message with your idea. You can do this by emailing me at info@melissaeybersart.com or visiting my commissions page and filling out the form. We’ll discuss the subject, size, timeline, and budget. Once we agree on the details, I’ll ask for a 50% deposit to begin the work.
- How much does a custom painting cost? Prices depend on the size and complexity of the piece. I’ll provide you with a quote after our initial discussion, with no obligation to proceed.
- How long does a commissioned painting take? Timeframes vary depending on size, but most commissions take between four to eight weeks to complete, plus drying and varnishing time.
- What kind of reference photos do you need for a commission? Clear, high-quality photos with good lighting work best, especially for portraits and pets. I’ll guide you on what to send once I know what you’re looking for. Please note that I will not copy any other artist’s or photographer’s work. All photographs should be your own or you should have permission to use it.
- Do I need to pay a deposit for commissioned work? Yes, a 50% non-refundable deposit secures your place in my schedule and covers materials. The balance is due once the painting is complete and you are happy with it.
- Can I request changes once the painting has started? Minor changes are possible during the early stages. I’ll send you progress updates so we stay aligned with where the painting is heading.
Shipping & Delivery
- Do you ship internationally? Yes, I’m happy to ship internationally. International orders are safely packaged and couriered with tracking and insurance.
- How is the artwork packaged for delivery? All paintings are securely packaged with paper, bubble wrap and cardboard box. For international deliveries paintings can be taken off the frame and rolled to ship in a tube to help keep the shipping costs down.
- How much does shipping cost? Shipping within South Africa is free on my original paintings, for commissioned works and international paintings it may differ depending on location and size of the work. I’ll give you a clear quote once I know where it is heading.
- How long does delivery take? Delivery times depend on location. South African orders on original paintings typically arrive within a week. International orders may take a few weeks.
- Will I receive a tracking number? Yes, as soon as your painting is dispatched, I’ll send you the tracking details so you can follow its journey.
Payments & Policies
- What payment methods do you accept? Paintings can be purchased either through my online shop which has a safe payment facility through Payfast. Payfast accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club credit and debit cards internationally. If you would prefer not to pay online you are welcome to contact me at info@melissaeybersart.com or on my contact page to make an arrangement.
Do you offer a payment plan on original paintings, not just commissions?
Yes, split payments are available on larger original works, the same way they are for commissions. Just get in touch and we can set up a plan that feels manageable for you.
- What is your return or refund policy? Because each piece is original and often custom-made, all sales are final. However, I do everything I can to ensure you’re happy before shipping, including detailed photos and progress checks.
- What happens if my painting arrives damaged?
If your painting is damaged in transit, please contact me within 48 hours with photos. I’ll work with you to either repair, replace, or refund depending on the situation and insurance.
Care & Framing
- How should I care for my oil painting? Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. No need to clean with water or chemicals.
- Are the paintings framed, and can you help with framing?
My paintings are sold unframed, but I’m always happy to help you choose a frame that suits your space, and I can arrange framing on your behalf at cost price if that’s easier for you.
- Can I hang the painting in a sunny room? I’d recommend against it. Direct sunlight can cause oil paint to fade or yellow over time, so a spot with bright, indirect light is best.
Miscellaneous
- Do you offer a Certificate of Authenticity? Yes, every painting is shipped with a signed certificate of authenticity.
